On Thursday 6th October the Principal Mr Ciaran O’Hare with all his staff hosted an “Open Evening” inviting all prospective parents , their sons and people from the local community to come along and see what the school offers in education and personal development to all it’s students. A huge crowd gathered in the newly refurbished gymnasium and were greeted with a cuppa from the very supportive Parent’s council. The evening then began with the arrival of the “Sam Maguire Cup”, carried in to loud applause by Mr. Pat Gilroy Manager of the Dublin team and Ger Brennan who plays centre back on the winning team. Mr O’ Hare welcomed everyone and spoke of how St Kevin’s follows the ethos of Edmund Rice its founder and has a pastoral attitude to education. The school is holistic in its approach and cares for the whole person and their development. The school offers academic choice, many extra curricular activities and has an open and approachable teaching staff when ever a problem arises. This was followed by a number of speeches beginning with Stephen Parnell, a past pupil, who spoke of his experience in St. Kevin’s. He praised the school for the interest and hard work of all the staff who are fully committed to helping the students reach their full potential. Stephen is now in third level education and he feels he achieved this through the supportive environment of the school. Mr.Pat Gilroy, Manager of the winning Dublin team spoke of the importance of sport for the development of confidence and for the students. He encouraged all the lads to be involved in sport at whatever level and to develop their gifts and talents to the best of their ability. President elect Mr. Sean Gallagher followed building on the theme of instilling confidence and self belief in our young people. He urged them to work hard and use their gifts and talents and to get involved in the extra curricular activities available. He also reinforced his belief that everyone has the potential to be anything they aspire to if they believe in themselves and work hard. Following the speeches all were invited to tour the school with many students as their guides. It was a terrific evening. There were displays of all that is happening in our local secondary school with all the teaching staff present to meet parents and students to answer their questions and to tell them more about their individual subjects.
